This exhibition arose out of our discussions around documenta 15 -which we really liked- and our desire to reflect on these broader discussions and position ourselves in them. If the first show was a look inward, this was an exclamation outward. We decided to offer an armory full of artpieces made of trash in the form of guns, bombs, drones, anti aircraft gear, a red button,…… All these pieces were free to take by any visitor on the condition that they would be used in a public act of protest. The results of which were to be e-mailed to us.
The ambiguity that arises at the moment when the weapons leave the exhibition space intrigues me very deeply. It is almost a logical step to offer the means for attack after the endless, increasingly nuanced, but ultimately impactless over-and-over talk about the desire to make the world a better place without really expressing this desire. Is this an act of cynicism? Or an expression of genuine hope in a system where no other option but to take tinkered guns seriously?
*As a result of someones protest a part of SMAK, the contemporary arts museum in Ghent, closed for two days. The sculpture is now in temporary storage at Vrienden of SMAK, a sister organisation of SMAK.
